Italeri Ju86E

Recommended Posts

Started today with some initial rubbing of wings and fuselage. Put a bit of plastic in the wheel wells just to 'busy' them up a little. Totally fictional but better than nowt I suppose.

You could have said the detailing was based on solid research.
Most of us wouldn't know the difference.

Well it looks good to me any road.

In between appointments with the physio and the scablifters I managed a little bit of 'fictional' business going on. Bits of plasticard and rod added here and there, seat was changed from the armchair appearance to something less comfortable. Still some bits to add as and when. The instrument panel has had a few holes drilled partial thickness in order to replicate dials etc. The decal for this is not great but then again it is a kit of a previous generation and still my fave Luftwaffe bomber.

An interesting build, I cant picture a JU86 at all, was going to google it but then thought no just go with it and see what it turns into. I am quite intrigued now! Hopefully no one will spoil my enjoyment by posting a picture of the real thing  :w00t: , now really looking forward to progress on this, great stuff so far.

I haven't done this particular version, but in years long past I did the airliner version (not my model, but it serves to show what you get in the box). It went quite well together with my L3M1 Nippon Go (once again, this one's not mine) .

Bob, don't click the links :P

A bit more plastic fantasy stuff going on, not a great deal so far but making the spaces look busy.

Airframe strips.

Seat on with foil belts and fear cockpit bulkhead

Back of the instrument panel. May add some wiring but it won't be seen anyway.

Got a bit of paint on bits and pieces.

The dangly bit of foil is supposed to be a safety attachment for the gunner.

Only one small wound so far and I refuse to answer the phone when fingers are occupied with plasticy stuff and scalpels nowadays. Lesson learnt.

Got a little bit more done today without any bloodshed. (Notice the clean scalpel blade).

DSC00864.jpg

Filling gaps ready for fettling on the underside. The bomb doors aren't a great fit closed so have bolstered them from behind with plasticard. Also drilled out the window in the access hatch and made a clear window.

DSC00863.jpg

This looked as if it would be irksome as the clear semi circle clearly does not fit flush with the bottom of the clear nose but above it,  however, a root around on tinterweb showed a nose close up clearly showing  that this panel was not flush with the bottom. Whether it was moveable I don't know but that's what I'm going with. Only glued in at this stage.

Closed up the fuselage and a bit of blending required here. That white thing is a highly accurate bombsight from the Darby Fictional Glass and Lens Company.

Excellent progress although I do feel a bit useless when I see all the engineering that you and @Gorby do.

Are you scratchbuilding 'the highly accurate bomb' as well ?

I did think about having the bays open and showing the tail ends of the bombs as a nod to the original kit part but decided against it.

A bit of rubbing and scribing. Also decided to have the for'ard bomb bay open as the doors weren't a great fit.

Wings together and the nacelles taking shape.

Notice the misaligned line, oops.

Canopy and nose section dipped in Klear and the engines don't look too bad for a kit that's almost but not quite as old as me. Engine wash is still wet.
