National Museum of Flight, East Fortune, Scotland.

@Che Guava and I spent an excellent day here and had arranged to photograph their Beech E18S in detail. It will feature in a walkaround later on.

Sad to see that no work has been done on the Beaufighter and that @Leo's pet Vulcan is looking rather sad after 39 years in the open.

I've left the pictures large in case any of you want to use any of them.

One of the few air museums in the UK I haven't visited, your pics inspire me to rectify that!

Miko (Home to East Fortune by road 260 miles in 4hrs 35mins according to Google maps, by rail, 12hrs 3mins!! )

I used to go to the air shows there when I lived up that way. Still remember the Catalina and MiG-15 and have pictures somewhere - actual film ones, it was pre-digital :D

Come up the East Coast, do the museum, overnight stop then do Dumfries and Crosby on Eden (Solway Aviation) on the way back south.

My pics only cover part of the exhibits, there are many more.

Oh, my! From a 1905/6 Green engine to a Concorde! I started listing all the must-see goodies in those piccies but my fingers wore out! Is this where the 19th century Percy Pilcher hang-glider/s hang out, too?

Ooh XM597 of diversion to Rio infamy. If there is anyone here who hasn't read the story I'd recommend looking it up. Superb airmanship in the face of 'trying circumstances'.

That auto-gyro is gorgeous.

Thanks for posting :)

The Green engine is a beauty right enough.

Sounds like a great plan! although, I'll be flying solo, usually my museum gallery or exhibition visits are accompanied by the lovely missus Miko, however our trip to 'Farnborough Air Sciences Trust' was enough for her, all that 'raspberry ripple' not her thing unfortunately!

Miko (lucky to have BBMF, East Kirkby, South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum Newark Air Museum and Elvington less than two hours away)

the lovely missus Miko,

She may enjoy looking through the restored buildings at EF whilst you do the heavy metal.

There's not too much time involved at Dumfries or Carlisle and both have good cafes. Make sure she brings a book.

Mrs RWG takes her knitting.

At RAF Lakenheath a long time back, I returned to the car to find the security police chatting to her. They had been there for ages as she reminded them of their mother and grandmother back in the USA,

After they left she told her one and only aircraft joke. "They never noticed me knitting the aircraft serial numbers into the pattern"

Doesn't sound much like mrs Miko, she's more the mother of all goth rock chics with a sinster melacholy vibe! But, in her day job as a 'learning resources officer' (don't call her a librarian, she 'will' bite!) she's a mild and modest respectable considerate lovely lady!

I really enjoyed the RAF stations of east Anglia occupied by the US Airforce, that last week in May kick starting the airshow season at Mildenhall was a highlight of the year! My first time was tempered by seeing most of the servicemen wearing 'hammer and sickle emblazoned on soviet red tee shirts and vests!??!?!

However, the barbequed burgers were just the best ever especially with the USAF burger sauce which when it became a little too thickened by constant heat of grill they would empty a six pack of Budwieser into it giving it's unique flavour!

Miko (still remember being breathless at my first sight of an SR71 in flight, like something out of a Gerry Anderson production)

Since that day, every time a RAF plane is going to or from the Falkland Islands, for some supernatural reason, the plane has some problem.... Studies conducted by the Spiritual Division of Leo Enterprises & Dirty Business Corp. they discovered that this supernatural force only works on days when the weather is good in Rio, the sun is shining and it takes 2 to 3 days to repair the plane. Not even Holmes solves this mystery.

I'm firmly convinced that far too many aircraft components break down in good weather near tropical locations when the aircraft is away from home. Conversely, if your home base is in a Northerly location, then they'll break when the weather outside is horrible and the aircraft is tucked up in its warm hangar.

One cold and dreich day, Walter decided that he had had enough and induced some nasty vibration ( I should stress that this was waaaaay above Walter's normal vibration levels)

Precautionary landing in car park of Kingshouse Hotel, Glencoe. What luck that we were working on The Buachaille .

Oh dear, a black BIM !  Contact Leuchars for the circus and a replacement rotor blade.

Lady of hotel comes out with 4 coffees.

Circus arrives, many meals taken by all involved. Tourists divert to look at helicopter and decide to take a meal. Hotel profits must have been well up that day.

All set and ready to go many hours later when lady of hotel runs out and informs us we haven't paid for the first 4 coffees.

Rio or Glencoe ?

Glencoe for me any day, now that that lady has retired :D
