GEG64 178
Like alot of us I've been away from the hobby for quite sometime. Now that I'm older I have a little more time to enjoy my once lost hobby. I'm like a kid again! I got back into scale models about six months ago and have built six models and I am completing my seventh one now. As most hobbies, there is always the joy of learning as we go. I am relearning and learning so many things like; weathering, preshading, washes, and the different glues just to name a few. When I was young there was only Testors glue and paints. Now there are several lines and types of paints and cement. I'm using Vallejo as my main source of paints although I still have quite a few of the Testor enamel paints. Tamiya extra thin is my go to and sometimes Mr. Hobby. During my 6 months I have watched countless YouTube videos and read just as many articles. It is amazing to see how realistic some builders make their models look. I have moved to incorporating my builds into dioramas and each one is a learning experience. My first one is a Tiger Late model that came to rest on a tree-lined road in the fall. The tank crew met a few infantrymen and are having a much needed break from the war. As they rest they are seen talking and joking and eating bread & drinking wine. I used Sculptamold over blue styrofoam board. My second one is a P-38 and a F4U-1D Corsair somewhere in the pacific surrounded by palm trees and several members of different crews preform maintenence while having some small talk on the airfield. I used a spare piece of sheetrock painted grey for the airfield. My 3rd one is my current diorama & will be an attempt at snow. This is a StuG IV crossing a muddy road, mud is squishing away and into the tracks. It comes to rest as the soldiers and crew break for rest and cigarettes. I used Sculptamold over sheetrock. I hope to share some photos as soon as I can figure out how to upload them to this site. Thanks for reading, Gary
Tolvcat 4,033
Hi Gary, welcome aboard. Sounds like you've already got the main 'secret' of both modelling and this site; having fun. Andy

Gorby 18,715
Welcome to ASM Gary! Looks like you’ve really thrown yourself back into the hobby and most importantly you’re enjoying it again – that’s the whole point after all. This site is a bit different to most, it’s more a community of mates having a laugh and a natter – sometimes even building model and not getting too hung up on things like accuracy. Are you from the US? Gorby

Are you from the US? Gorby Thank you, Gorby. I try for some accuracy but most of all having fun with the hobby helps in reducing day-to-day stressors. Yes, I'm in the US, Houston Texas where it's already starting to get hot and humid, but that's our norm and AC is a must. lol
