The ambition of dictator Solano Lopez (who was married to an English woman) led three countries to go to war against him. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay entered this war against Paraguay's ambitions, as did a certain Austrian corporal 70 years later in Europe. And like the madman with the ridiculous mustache, near the end of the war, Paraguayan children were fighting men. More than 80% of the country's male population was killed and after the conflict, young Paraguayans aged 12, 15 married 2, 3, or 4 women to repopulate the country. Argentina proposed that Paraguay be divided between Brazil and "los hermanos", but Caxias(who was the commander of the all troops) prevented it.
