1/12 scale Fire Service hook ladder wagon, wood and metal kit by Model Trailways

Recommended Posts

at the start while doing a parts check, I found a rope cleat missing, I filled in their customer service form and true to their promise, this arrived in this mornings post, I have to give Model expo 10 out of 10 for prompt service, I'm pleased and impressed with them.

what this means is, I can start making up the ladders, once I've finished the wagon itself, I have the rope to add to the large roller at the front, some odd nuts and bolts, three wheels to finish off, the hook on a pole to add to the side of the vehicle.

using the kit supplied square to check the rounds of the single storie ladder are 90' to the rungs.

the wheels all finished except for the tires to be painted black, once the varnish has dried. the ladder placed out of the way while the glue sets.

wood dust and white glue will fill the tiny gaps.

trial fit of the completed wheels, just to make sure they slip over the axle ends without having to apply wheel breaking pressure, they slipped on fine as I'd sanded the axle ends previously, before the wheels were started.

That double ladder look fun

it's rather complicated to try and understand the written instructions on it, so I'm taking it step by step, using the plans and pinning the bottom ladder out, steam bent the ends to allow that bow out shape, left to harden overnight.

This is making me want to have a go at a good old fashioned balsa kit

I can remember visiting the Model Engineer Exhibition (I think it still runs at Ally Pally), where the balsa guys would exhibit uncovered structures, always fancied having a go at that.

placing the lower extending ladder to one side to let the glue harden off before I can sand it all flush.

the upper ladder pinned onto the plan to keep it all square.
