Got a bit of work done this week on my second Airfix 1/72 Phantom FG.1

And today, Postie delivered my Aerocraft 1/72 Replacement Spey Cans. Right engine is the kit part sanded smooth and the left one is the Aerocraft resin replacement.

That's a huge difference in size did airfix get them that wrong??

Not really sure.

My guess is Airfix did get it right as they did LIDAR two different Phantoms to get their data for their kit.

The Aerocraft 1/72 resin ones appear to be the same size as the Fujimi kit ones.

Looking good, Chris
Despite agreeing with Miggers, I do like the disruptive scheme on the Phantom

But yeah, Fly Navy!

Wasn't aware of the burners being undersized.
Just ordered a couple of pairs of proper big cans.
Thanks for the heads up

Nah. I prefer my airfields to stay where I left them and not go blundering off in some random direction at the behest of a bloody fish-head! :P

Typical ruff-assed Crab truck driver who's hovercraft is full of fish(runs off to get some protective head gear due to something glinting on the far S.E horizon:biggrin:).

Airfix also managed to get the exhausts to look like the stepped pyramid of Saqqara when the outside was actually smooth so if they used their LIDAR on a Phantom airframe they didn't have the engines fitted at the time.

I don't think any of the FG.1s got the stiffening plate on the underside fitted before they went out of service.

There are optional parts, with and without the reinforcement if I understand what you're referring to Duncan.
On the other hand the instructions may have neglected to suggest removing the ILS antennae, which has casued some grief to modellers who found out too late!

Yes the stiffeners underneath. The ILS aerials are OK for one of the RAF FG.1s, they didn't have them when with the FAA though.

Just remembered the "terracing" in the underside of the outer wing section.
I'm pretty sure that was not on the FAA Phantoms either.

Speaking of skillets..

Edit: Removed the direct link because I forgot how much heavily Finnish-accented swearing there was in it. VERY NSFW!

Like I said, legs it to don protective head gear due to something seen glinting on the very far horizon off to the South East of one's present location...........

Erm,not going to Cosford Airshow with the cadettery this year are you Debs????........................

(note to self, skid lid needs to be taken and donned before going to say"Ellow" to Debs and Co)
