General chat about models and modelling.

Recommended Posts

Our friendly grump thread has got to 55 pages and our friendly chat is now on page 52. I seem to recall someone mentioning that this is supposed to be a modelling forum, but there isn't a general modelling chat thread. Do you think it would be a good idea?

Lets start off with:

I've decided to sell some kits. I don't often build kits now and rarely build aircraft, but I've still got kits I bought five years ago when I was in aircraft only mode. If I was going to build them I've had plenty of opportunity, but they keep being passed over in favour of building something else.

Then I can use the proceeds to buy another stash like Richard. :smiling:

Have any of you sold off a good proportion of your stash and then regretted it?

Yes,a 1/72 Airfix Fokker Friendship and a Hunter FGA.9.

In pre-E-Bay and mates on here days,I flogged off some I knew I'd probably not build, there were one or two their in hindsight I wish I'd kept.

Then a few years ago,I sold some to help fund another itch I wanted to scratch, one of which was an Airfix Whirlwind helo,

I wish I'd kept that.

I didn't sell off or give away anything that is irreplaceable but I do miss all 433 of them.

@Che Guava will be sad too when he finds out that I was looking last night for a Hurricane 1 which could have been added to his bag of goodies ,only to remember that I'd sold it.

I really must make an inventory.

@Gorby Please don't make a list of what you've got. Oh ok then..fire away !

It'll only be six kits, but that will be the majority of my mini stash - they're all 1/48 I'm afraid.

When the lockdown looks like it might be coming to an end I'll bung them in the 'For Sale' bit - with a discount for BxM members. Then if there are any left I might jack the price up a tad and list them next door.

Yes.... when i got divorced. The ex turned nasty, ( surprise...) and I got wind of her plan, so I actually sold all but 20 of my kits to one of my friends, a collector. He payed me in 3 installments and I listed them sold for R100 😁

There were over 400 kits there, kits I had been collecting since I was around 21...

The other 20 kits were the valueable ones in monetery terms and I boxed them up and couriered them to my cousin in Nuneaton. 😁

I deeply regret selling them.... kits youve had like 20 years... anyway, in the past now 😁

(And my bloody cousin nicked a couple, damn treacletowners 😬

This is all so saaaaaad!

Will I list the ones I didn't buy but wish I had*? Actually, over the years, and recently - thanks @RWG686 - I've managed to acquired most of them. Just a few weird ones left from the Dark Ages (1980-2010ish) when I lost my way and gave up the true faith scale and had children and a job and stuff.

*Ebay will provide, praise be to Ebay (congregation repeat).

And actually, wait till you see my next 'tenner or under' acquisition via the blessed Auction House (congregation response: Praise be to Ebay).

Gorbs, you only have 12 kits, why would you want to have a stash cull?

Twelve kits! I'll have you know that I've now got ten unbuilt kits!

It's not so much the number of kits but the fact that I've now moved on to build other things and have absolutely no interest in building them and more.

Yes but you're just bloody awkward!

Me on the other hand.... :innocent:

(Although that's exactly why I might decide to keep them after all. :blushing:)

I have an infeasibly large stash of mostly 1/72 scale WW2 Luftwaffe aircraft, it's going to take me another 62.5 years to build them all if I stick to my current rate of production, don't buy any more and ignore all the other scales in the stash. I have had a bit of a clear out and while I wasn't anywhere near ruthless enough so probably haven't got to the "treasures" yet I don't regret selling them off. I'm getting to a point in my life where I am having to take stock of what I misspent all my hard earned cash on as opposed to continuing to spend it. I will have another round of sell offs soon but I will still be left with more kits than I could possibly build in this lifetime so won't have to worry about running out of the kits.

If I only had 12 kits in the stash I probably wouldn't be bothered though, I know I'll still end up with a stash well in excess of that figure after the cull. Got to leave something for Mrs B to sort out when I pop my socks as my son (and my brother if he's still around by then) will have the guitar collection.

With me, with my historic stash I'd mostly forgotten about, plus RWG's wide-ranging contribution (of stuff he knew I'd want), my loft is like being in the best model shop ever - no big tank boxes taking up shelf space, no huge battleships and ocean liner models, no free flight stuff or floaty yachts. just stuff "...that I LOVE!*" (*copyright Teressa May, 2019).

Then I think "meh, and go and buy something"* (*copyright @Mad Steve 2021)

I think last year was worse because for most of it, we couldnt just pop to the model shop when we wanted, so when you sat on the couch with your coffee it was like, ooh, lets see whats new at so and so's... probably why I bought so many 48th scale armour kits

(This of course does not apply to Gorby because he seems to have cast off the shackles of being a mere mortal that actually buys models.... 😬)
